Tsunami Coming?

Spent the evening in Waikiki with cousin Pete Steinfeld and family. Traffic coming home was really bad and we were only getting home around 10 pm. About a mile from home we started hearing loud sirens, much louder than the monthly civil defense tests. We got home and turned on tv to hear about the earthquake in Japan and the tsunami which could hit us around 3 am. We are 4 houses from the official flood zone, but began to pack for evacuation. In a little while, a fire truck came down each street in our neighborhood with a very loud loudspeaker announcing that we need to evacuate to higher ground. We could see all the neighbors in the street and putting things in their cars, too. Tom wanted his uniform washed in case he needed to "work" (he only has one til his trunk gets here from Egypt) so we threw that in the washing machine/dryer while we packed the car. We left around midnight and decided to drive to the big hill where the Officer's Club is, overlooking the ocean. The parking lot was full but we squeezed into the last space and hunkered down, trying to sleep. There were lots of people talking on cell phones and to each other, plus headlights of cars coming and going, and mosquitoes biting us in the car, so Aeryn was not very happy. She was strapped into her car seat and crying, "Papa, get the bug, get the bug!" She eventually fell asleep around 3:30 am. At 4:30 we turned on the radio and they were saying that the first wave at 3:30 was mild, although there were waters 6 feet above normal in some places. The warning was in effect til 7:00 am, but we decided to leave and get home to our beds. Everything was fine on the way home and at home, so we were very grateful to God for that. After getting Aeryn taken care of and the car unloaded, we got to bed around 5:30 and slept til 8:30. We actually feel pretty good right now. It is a really beautiful day, not even cloudy or rainy, but I'm staying close to home because at some point I think Aeryn will crash and need a nap. Right now she seems in a really good mood, though! It was really good practice, and I think the warning system was amazing. Now our prayers go out to the people in Japan - I can't imagine what they are going through. Thanks for all the prayers and emails and text messages. "Next time" we will go to a friend's house who lives further inland...another lesson learned. :)
